This play is based on some of the well-known television programmes that Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft produced for the BBC during the period 1982 – 92 under the same title; their work remains hugely popular, attracting large audiences, as was the case with this production. Despite the fact that many of the techniques used in the making of television programmes, such as camera switching, instant close-ups and editing are not available for use in stage plays, the combined directing talents of Mary O’Neill and Rosemary Gibson ensured their audiences were treated to a highly entertaining show. The well designed and constructed main set featured the interior of the Café Rene with the furniture positioned so that ample space was available for the actors to move around in. There was also sufficient room at either side of the stage in which different parts of the story line were acted out.  Particularly strong performances were delivered by Tony Lane (as Rene’ Artois), Gail Meakin (as Madame Edith), Briony Sparrow and Jo Toomey (as the waitresses Mimi and Yvette) and Steve Sale (as the Italian Captain Bertorelli). Paul Meakin (as Herr Flick) and Jess Vincent (as Helga) were well matched and there was enthusiastic application by other members cast in supporting roles, resulting in a fine team effort. The sustained applause delivered by the very appreciative audience at the conclusion of the performance was well deserved. Congratulations to all who were involved in this production!
