This is a musical using the songs of Elvis Presley in a story based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth night. A motorbike riding, guitar playing lad arrives in a sleepy American town. When he fixes a jukebox just by touching it the town starts to liven up, people start to fall in love, not necessarily with the person that loves them. Will there be a happy ending for everyone?
The large cast was full of energy and their enthusiasm and enjoyment shone. Dance routines were performed accurately and with passion by even the youngest members of the chorus. Choreographing for a stage full of cast is no mean feat and it was done with style by Kate Gavin.
As with every musical the strength of the musical numbers is paramount, all of the principals performed admirably. The leads Chad (Will Thompson) and Natalie (Chloe-Francis Burns) were played with conviction and depth. Jessie Heard as Lorraine showed great talent for her young age and is one to watch in the future. Her budding romance with Dean Hyde (George Craker) was a joy to watch. Miss Sandra, the object of affection for most of the male characters in the show was depicted by Charlotte Blakeman, her character was maintained at all times with poise and a strong stage presence which was matched by her vocal ability. Dennis (Josh Hale) is the underdog, the geek of the piece, you find yourself willing him to get the girl of his dreams, this is in no small way down to Josh’s ability to make you feel for his character. Nathan Routledge, (Jim Haller) Megan Evans (Sylvia) and Kieran Palmer (Sheriff Earl) and Georgie Boon (Mayor Hyde) have the unenviable task of playing adults. They all do this convincingly with Kieran earning cheers when his character stands up to his wife and Georgie making an impression with her solo number.
All Shook Up is a feel good show that you can’t help tapping your feet and clapping along too. This production was a great display of talent and enthusiasm and a joy to watch.
