"All Shook Up" is a bright, lively musical that brings the music of Elvis Presley to the stage through a storyline filled with romance, dance, and secrets. The musical features a selection of Elvis's greatest hits, re-arranged to fit the narrative, giving the audience a taste of the essence of Elvis and the joy of his music. The show opens with "Jailhouse Rock," setting a high level of energy that continues throughout the production. Chad, played by Ben Collins, showcases his talent in abundance in the opening number and throughout his performance with great singing and dancing.
Natalie Haller, played by Danielle Barbour, navigates the complexities of growing up without a mother, and her performance was excellent with strong vocals and acting, including in her disguise as Ed. Dennis, played by Lewis Brown, showed all sides of his loving character, and his vocals and acting were top notch. Gillian Stewart in the role of Sylvia captivated the audience with her vocals and in particular her performance of ‘There’s Always Me’. Natalie’s father, Jim Haller was played by Dave Crozier, and he gave us a strong performance. Mayor Matilda Hyde was well portrayed by Susan Bradley, and she had excellent stage presence. Lorraine and Dean played by Ace Scott and Murray Brown worked well together, and we saw some great moments in both singing and acting from Miss Sandra, played by Iona McHugh. Daniel Connolly in the role of Sherriff Earl quietly went about his business with great stage presence. With a great supporting cast of minor principal roles, featured ensemble, and ensemble, this show was overflowing with high energy and great performances, and we enjoyed many of the well-known and stand out musical numbers such as Jailhouse Rock, Can’t Help Falling In Love, and of course the title song of the musical, All Shook Up.
In keeping with the 1950s, costumes, hair and make-up were true to the period of the show. With a well thought out set, scenes flowed with ease and as always at a CMS show, the lighting and sound were excellent. The solo singing and ensemble vocal harmonies were strong and with a well-balanced band under the musical direction of Michael Smith we enjoyed the music of Elvis throughout this show. Direction and choreography in the capable hands of Caroline Anderson was slick and we saw great light and shade throughout the production. With the usual warm welcome, it made for a great evening at the theatre where we enjoyed this great production. Thank you and well done!
