A very strong and poignant play to commence the new season from Sutton Arts. This powerful drama unfolded into a piece about defective aircraft engines and the turmoil they can cause.
Richard Clarke played Joe Keller, a partner in the company who manufactured the batch of faulty engine and who was trying to blame his other partner, who was in prison for the offence. Richard played the role well and was hardly off stage. The role of his son, Chris was played by Christopher Commander who gave a good and solid performance but what more would you expect. Ann Deever, his girlfriend and daughter of the partner in prison, was played by Amy White who gave great support. George Deever, played by Harry Robbins was her brother and he came across really well. Hard to believe this was his first play with Sutton Arts. Good support came from Simon Baker and Jayne Lunn as Jim and Sue Bayliss who brought the Deever house next door to the Keller’s and also from Ollie Farrelly and Keyleigh Alison as Frank and Lydia Lubey. Special mention to Peter Barker as Bert, the pretend Deputy who was convinced there was a jail under the Keller’s house.
The highlight of the evening, for me, was watching the superb Liz Berriman perform as Kate Keller. Every time she came on the stage she commanded the stage. An outstanding performance.
The play was set in the Keller’s family backyard and Sutton Arts set builders had done it again with a great set. But you would expect nothing more from them. Costumes were good and the lighting gave the right sort of mood to the piece.
Though not a large audience, they enjoyed it and Faye Hatch should be proud of her production.
