This powerful, gritty piece of drama by Arthur Miller was inspired by a true incident in the American aviation industry, when defective aviation engines were released for military use. The Marlowes brought to life the story through Chris and John`s very good thought provoking production.

Mike Asprey, played Joe Keller, the company boss who had put the blame on his partner for releasing damaged plane parts, which resulted in the loss of twenty one pilots in WWII.  He delivered an accomplished performance , slowly coming to terms with his own guilt. Suzi Illston gave an excellent portrayal of his neurotic wife Kate, who could not let go of the hope that their son Larry was alive and would return, although he had been reported killed.

Their other son Chris,  was portrayed by Simon Paget who was utterly compelling, both in his courtship of Anne Deever and his emerging realisation that he had been deceived by his father.  Anne, played by Sophie Paulden, gave an assured portrayal, as did Paul Makinson and Julie Campbell as the neighbours, together with friends Frank and Lydia Lubey played by Rick Law and Claire Wade. Finally, arriving on the scene,  George Deever, played by John Freeman expertly contributed to the irrevocable demise of the Keller`s world.

With a simple but most effective veranda set, excellent stagecraft and believable performances, this was a drama of high quality.
