Idle and Thackley Kids Academy presented a great stage adaptation of Alice in Wonderland with a vibrant, fast-paced production with imaginative staging and modern visual flair that captivated its young audience members while keeping the adults thoroughly entertained.
The show was directed by Jordan Anderson and Choreographed and Vocals by Emma Burton who did a fantastic job of bringing terrifying topsy turviness and accessible to community family fun. You could tell by what was going on stage in terms of cast and set that a great deal of thought, hard work and excellent theatrical vision had gone into the production of this show. A special mention to also the backstage crew especially the set designer who did a great job in designing and building the set.
Alice played by Niamh was a bold, curious performer who commanded the stage and effortlessly transitioned between comedy and graceful movement all the time playing a word-perfect role that barely left the stage. An immense task for such a young and talented performer. Meanwhile, characters like the Queen of Hearts played by Lily May with a commanding, over-the-top "diva" energy that delivers immediate both laughs and fright as whose head was coming off next? Connie playing the “always late” White Rabbit got the role down to a T using wide eyes, frantic pacing, and rigid postures to convey a constant state of panic. The most famous scene in “Wonderland” is of course “The Mad Hatters Tea Party” with Robin playing The Mad hatter, Amelia playing The Mad March hare and Honey playing the Dormouse this scene delighted the audience with its high energy and comedic chaos with each character being more eccentric than the other. The Cheshire Cat played by Mikey smiled all the time he was on stage bringing the character to life but also in one scene the character was cleverly portrayed and brought to life through glowing puppetry, clever lighting, and illusion. The Duchess played by Isabelle along with the cook played by Leighia had the audience in hysterics with the “pig/baby” scene and the Knave played by Florence as the nursery rhyme predicts stole all the tarts! The Caterpillar was played by Amelia who sitting high atop a giant mushroom, this sluggish, smoking philosopher delivered some of the most profound subtext in the show
There were also so many other characters, each of them played so well for actors of such a young age.
Congratulations to all on stage and off and I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
