Aladdin JR with only 9 days page to stage, this latest offering I had to see from The Drama Dept. Red Floral had once again stepped in to decorate a proscenium arch in tonal Aladdin colours with balloons, large flowers, lamps and various bits of dangling greenery which was a visual delight when you stepped into the auditorium. A platform ladder had also been decorated with beautifully coloured foliage. The side flats were white with gold coloured lights shining on them to create a warm, gentle yellow glow, a large screen across the back of the stage area had the Disney Aladdin JR logo and trademark colours projected onto it.
Lighting throughout by Keegan Jones-McCaw was sympathetic to the scenes and very on point, there was a very good use and understanding of depth of colour for atmospherical effect. The sound by Gary Jones had a few gremlins and drops but it didn`t detract from the audiences evident enjoyment. Choreography by Gary Jones was slick and tight, it was interesting and exciting with something going on all the time – the cast really looked like they were enjoying themselves. Costumes by Janet Newcombe and Annabel Reyes were vibrant and sumptuous with a bold mix of fabrics and textures, there was sequin and satin sparkle offset with red, black and purple drama. The stage crew got things done quickly, quietly and safely.
The ensemble worked hard throughout this production, they came out with attack and energy and didn`t let it drop all the way through. They performed the choreography with smiles and laughter which was lovely to see.
Heather Drew as the evil Jafar was every inch the baddie, she swished her cloak at every opportunity and looked about sneeringly, she had a very strong characterisation and an excellent presence on the stage. Jack Lightfoot was born to play this part, he was every inch Aladdin and was an absolute joy to watch, I believed everything he said – he truly transported me to the make believe land of Aladdin. He had some great chemistry onstage with Hannah Donoghue (Jasmin). Hannah was every inch the pampered Princess with sass, her characterisation was solid, she made a good connection with the audience, they both treated us to some lovely vocals. Scarlett Walsh played The Genie, I was pleased to see that she brought her own personality to her characterisation – with such a well known character it can be difficult to choose between portraying it as it had been played in the film already or pulling out your own set of tricks. She also brought some strong vocals to her part. I was also pleased to note that there were no prompts heard for anyone.
Thank you for inviting me to your production of Aladdin JR, I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
