Adapted from the 1992 award-winning film, Disney’s Aladdin Jr was the ideal choice for this energetic and super-enthusiastic Company.
In the title role of the hapless street urchin, Inis Balfour gave a strong performance both in acting, dancing and singing. This was equalled by Holly Kitchen as Princess Jasmine, showing just the right amount of “attitude” for the part! Their rendition of “A Whole New World” whilst aboard the magic carpet was a pleasure to listen to.
Martha Ferguson gave an energy-filled performance as the dominant Genie, while the evil Jafar was brought to life by Matthew Garrie, complete with impressive staff. Jafar’s sidekick, Iago, the parrot, always ready with evil advice, was impressive throughout, and kept up the bird-like movements right to the end. The Sultan (Lewis Walker) portrayed the frustrated father attempting to marry off his daughter – who was having none of it! One such suiter being Prince Abdullah (Findlay Spence), played with remarkable calmness, but getting some of the best lines in the show – “They told me she was very obedient!” being one that comes to mind. Findlay, like all the principals exhibited fine diction, allowing the radio mics to boost their voices slightly without any loss of clarity.
Supporting principals made the most of their dialogue and singing. Princess Jasmine’s three sidekicks Isir (Kara Izatt), Manal (Effy Duncan) and Rajah (Olivia Morgan) brought fun to their scenes and showed good characterisations for their roles. This was also the case for Aladdin’s best buddies, Babkak (Bethany Downes), Omar (Ewan Maguire) and Kassim (Georgia Langley). Congratulations to all the other minor principals each of whom in his or her way added immensely to a first class show. The LAMA Youth chorus (of which there were a substantial number) was the icing on the cake with regard to the performing members. Their singing and choreography was excellent, thanks in no small way to Musical Director Katy Holligan and Choreographer Amy Elder. I have to congratulate Amy on her ability to move so many people within the confines of a small stage!
Technically, the set – centred on a video wall – gave sufficient space and variety of heights to accommodate the large numbers in LAMA Youth. Lighting by Kieran Hotchkiss was colourful and appropriate for the style of show. The wardrobe was excellent, all in the correct style for the period and the fabrics used gave an overall sumptuous feel to the production.
All of the above was brought together by Director, Iain Hughes and his assistant, Andrew Doig. Well done Gentlemen!
Finally, well done to the whole of LAMA Youth for a very fine evening of Disney!
