In theatre programmes characters are usually listed in order of speaking; well, in the case of SPADS Aladdin this would have been the audience. From the moment Abanazar, played with just the right element of villainy by Alan Reilly, appeared in the spotlight, the boos began, putting audience participation at the heart of this cracking production.
This was a lively, energetic and fast-paced show expertly directed by Annabel Clarke and greatly aided by the youthful and enthusiastic chorus. The audience took Jordan Clarke and Sarah Freer as Aladdin and Princess Jasmine to their hearts, not least for their excellent singing. Old stagers Peter Wright and Patrick Lohan as Widow Twankey and Dishee Washee provided much of the comedy while newcomer Jacob Powell as PC Won Ton gave good support in this area.
The dancing and singing were first rate throughout but a particular highlight came in the duet by Helen Lohan and Jenny Glatzhofer as Genie of the Lamp and the Slave of the Ring, another example of experience and youth blending together superbly. Add in an hilarious slapstick scene, bright and colourful costumes, a first rate band and a scamp of a dog called Jimmy Chew and you get an evening that is thoroughly enjoyed by young and old alike.
Well done SPADS, another great pantomime!
