Aladdin

SLT’s pantomime offering was Alan P Frayn’s version of “Aladdin” and my goodness what a slick and polished production they made of it. This popular script is very funny, even some of the character’s names generated laughter – calling the Chinese police officers “Hu-dun-pong” and “Yu-dun-wong” caused much mirth, especially among the younger audience members. This was a well-cast production in which a great deal of attention had been given to developing characterisation. The young chorus were disciplined, working well as a team in parading the dragon, and their dance routines were executed with precision. Craig Paikes (as Widow Twankey) was brilliantly made-up and produced a most alluring performance! Lines were delivered with clarity by all the players, as were their songs. Renditions by Hayley Baker (as Aladdin) and Anna Albuixech (as Princess Mandarin) were outstanding. The efficient production team dealt swiftly with the set changes and provided sound and lighting effects on cue. This was indeed great family entertainment. I was pleased to see the article detailing the “History of Pantomime” included in the programme; I’m sure audiences will have found it informative and helpful. Congratulations to all involved in the production of this show!
