“Aladdin” has always been one of my favourite pantomimes as it marked my debut into amateur theatre nearly fifty years ago. I loved this production which was both written and directed by Joe Johnson. The script was extremely well crafted and was very funny; I don’t think I stopped laughing all evening. The direction by Joe Johnson was excellent; it was well cast and had a great pace throughout. The scene changes flowed with ease and were well executed. The choreography by Jed Marshall was very good and greatly enhanced the pantomime. Well done to all the production team!
There were some very strong and credible performances from all the cast. Abanazar who was played by Bill Horsley gave us plenty of opportunity to boo and hiss. Good character portrayals from Jack Dawson as Iggor and Dee Hale as Lady. Colin Reay as Widow Twankey had a great rapport with the audience. Wishee and Washee played by Craig Jones and Emma Holmes were very funny. Laura Ilkiw-Jenkins gave a strong performance in the title role of Aladdin. Tyler Marshall was a credible Baazar Inspector. Princess Jasmine was beautifully played by Poppy Dawson. Kevin Johnson and Lilita Viksne were very good as Sultan and Sultana. Good work from Robert Harris and John Williams who were part of the ensemble. Special mention must go to Sarah Laing who stepped in at the last minute to play the role of Alexa! Well done to all the cast.
The set and props were very good and were well constructed and utilised. The costumes were excellent and I must say were some of the best I have seen in amateur theatre. The lighting and sound quality was very good throughout the evening.
Congratulations to all at Abbey Community Theatre both on and off the stage for this highly entertaining and traditional production of “Aladdin”.
