A Magical Adventure with Downfield Musical Society’s Aladdin
Downfield Musical Society brought energy and vibrancy to their production of Aladdin, offering a fun-filled evening of panto magic and laughter. Under the direction of Graeme Neil Smith, an energetic cast brought this classic tale to life with humour, charm, and plenty of sparkle.
Rebecca Waghorn was a strong lead as Aladdin, delivering a charismatic performance that captured the adventurous spirit of the role. Her chemistry with Carina Millar’s Princess Jasmine was heartfelt, with Millar bringing warmth and elegance to the stage.
Ross Lesslie as Wishee Washee had the audience in stitches, with his lively humour and vibrant interaction. Stuart Young’s Widow Twankie delivered the over-the-top hilarity one expects from a classic panto dame, with fantastic costumes adding to the fun.
Alex McCunn gave a solid performance as the scheming Abanazar, balancing menace with humor. Drew Knox as the Vizier added an extra layer of comedic villainy, while Karen Young as KitKat as the Genie of the Ring brought charm and character to her role and Robyn Gaughan sparkled from head to toe as the Genie of the Lamp.
The supporting cast added a further layer of depth and all crazy moments. Duos Gavin White and Fraser Paterson as Cheap and Cheerful, and Tegan Carswell and Adeline Foote as Constable Constable and Sergeant Sergeant had great comedic timing, and brought slapstick fun to their scenes. Abbey Adams as Saffron, Jasmine’s best friend, delivered a warm and engaging performance, and Douglas Lamont as the Emperor added a regal presence to the production. Lizzie Lothian’s Pan Pan, Wishee Washee’s panda companion, was a charming addition that delighted the audience.
The ensemble work was lively and enthusiastic, with the young adults and youth cast giving their all to Rebecca Waghorn’s choreography. Musically directed by Ian Strachan, the karaoke-style backing vocals felt unnecessary given the undeniable vocal talent within DMS.
The Magic Carpet scene was handled with flair and impressed the audience. This was enhanced by the fantastic lighting design by PC Lighting, which brought depth and vibrancy to the stage, particularly during key magical moments.
With dazzling costumes, colourful cloths, and an undeniable sense of fun, Aladdin was a crowd-pleaser. The cast and crew of Downfield Musical Society should be proud of delivering an enjoyable and entertaining production for all ages and an opportunity to enter into the spirit of Christmas.
Well done Downfield Musical Society. Wishing you all a great Christmas and lots more theatrical fun in 2025
