ALADDIN
Thank you for inviting Phyllis and I to your Pantomime production. The hospitality, as always, was excellent and it was lovely to see such a full house at the Carnegie Theatre.
This Pantomime production from WADAMS was up to the usual high standard that us, the audience, have come to expect. All the hard work put in during the rehearsal period was well worth it. I liked the use of the video wall taking us to the different destinations and the scene in the cave when Aladdin is looking for the magic lamp was particularly effective. All properties were effective and well worked. There were some good lighting and sound effects giving the overall production credibility. Although the sound was well worked, I felt on balance it was rather too loud throughout the performance. The soundtracks run by M.D. Mark Hazzard were very good.
All the leading performers played their parts well. Aladdin and Princess Jasmine, played by Sarah Deans and Elizabeth Corless, were well cast. Abanazer, played by Jack Pike, was a very scary and convincing villain - he sang ‘Night Boat to Cairo’ with great gusto. Shirley McLean as Wishee Washee worked very hard throughout the production - she certainly had the audience engaged, a little boy sitting in front of me was almost exploding with enthusiasm, this is not an easy role to perfect and Shirley did it with ease. Eric Finlay, as always, was an outstanding Dame. His costumes became more outrageous as the show progressed and the wig he wore with his finale costume made him look eight foot tall. His interaction with the audience was excellent and poor old Dean certainly took some stick. At one point during a chase he ran through the audience on the balcony and slid down the banister to the stalls. All the minor roles were very well cast. The ensemble numbers and dances were well done, but I would have liked to see more of them. Overall I felt there wasn't enough ensemble numbers.
On balance this was a alround excellent production we had a very enjoyable evening, congratulations to everyone involved.
