I saw this show, the last in a run of six performances, which was taking place on a Sunday afternoon. On arriving at the venue at 12.30pm there were only a few vacant parking spaces and on entering the main hall stewards were searching for more chairs to cope with the exceptional demand for seats at this very popular event. I have long been an enthusiastic supporter of pantomimes since they are often a child’s first experience of live theatre and it was heartening to see so many people attending in family groups.
Much work had been carried out by the writer to freshen-up this classic panto story with exciting action, funny routines, squeal-promoting slapstick comedy and jokes guaranteed to provoke laughter. This production was superbly well cast with all the principal players working extremely hard to successfully establish repartee with the audience.
The Chorus provided excellent vocal support for the songs and the LDC Dance Troupe performed amazingly fast and complex routines. The two Chinese police officers named Yu-Dun-Wong and Hu Dun-Pong were, understandably, responsible for much mirth.
The costumes were extremely colourful, the lighting plan fantastic and the sound system well balanced. This was an immensely entertaining show of a very high calibre. Wonderful to see so many people enjoying this great tradition!
