With plenty of magic and a tale from the mysterious East, Aladdin remains one of the best known and loved of British pantomimes with an unlikely Machievellian villain to boot! Joseph Lawrence made the most of his role as Abanazar and seemed to relish the hisses and boos that accompanied his every entrance. He was well supported by Thomas York (Widow Twankey) and John Baish (Wishee Washee) whose performances were full of energy and exuberance which elicited an enthusiastic response from those present. Victoria Farrant (Aladdin) and Christy-Ann Wilson (Princess Jasmine) offered performances which complemented each other nicely. Some of the lesser roles needed to bring more characterisation to their performances - something which will come as they gain experience. I enjoyed Sofia Lazienko's genie - a very cheeky leprechaun - most unusual.
The chorus were kept busy throughout as were the stage crew who worked hard to keep the action moving onwards. The set was simple but suitable for purpose as were the costumes. The lighting added to the ambience of the show and, as always, I appreciated the presence of a live trio of musicians as I find that this always adds a dimension to any show.
For me the show lacked a little of the magic of pantomime but I did see the first show. The audience were very appreciative and the youngsters in the auditorium really loved Widow Twankey's cheeky washing basket which caused much delighted giggling. Aladdin's flying carpet was also mangaed well.
