It was against the backdrop of a magnificently painted and enchanting backdrop that I was treated to a performance of Aesop’s Fables. Its been a very long time since I had learnt these at school and the stories were a reminder of the traditional animal tales with of course a moral.

The 11 players of the youth section of WADODS were supported on stage by 11 taller team members. It was explained at the start of the show that we would therefore have little sheep and big sheep, little narrators and big narrators, little ants and big ants and so forth. The interaction between all of the little and big actors was great to see, especially with the encouragement of some performers in supporting with dance steps, providing prompts for lines, occasionally waiting for a missing performer and of course some unexpected ad-libbing.

Productions like these always rely on an army of people working in the background to make sure that the right performer is in the right place, at the right time, in the right costume and with the right prop. Well done to all involved in this mammoth task.

The cast were accompanied with two brass players providing suitable musical interludes and the music for the singing and dancing. There was a lovely maypole dance with not a tangled ribbon in sight and a lively and enthusiastic cast for such a warm Summers evening. The creativity in this production was clear to see through the costumes and props. I particularly enjoyed the flying insects and the circulating carrots!

It was great to see the performers of tomorrow having so much fun. Thank you for your kind invitation to attend, you have now set the bar for being extra creative.
