Vane Tempest Theatre Group's concert Across the Pond was a delightful celebration of music from, and inspired by, the United States. Featuring an excellent mix of musical theatre, pop and rock classics, the programme offered something for everyone, and the audience clearly appreciated the variety and quality of the performances.

The concert showcased the wealth of talent within the group, with several members stepping into the spotlight for memorable solo performances. Charlotte Gibson delivered a beautiful rendition of My Brother Lived in San Francisco, while Matthew Finkel treated the audience to the ever-popular theme from New York, New York. Suzy Wake gave an energetic and engaging performance of The 59th Street Bridge Song, and Keith Armitage had us all chuckling in our seats with his entertaining rendition of Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh.

Musical Director Ben Wardropper also took on the role of host for the evening, providing light-hearted and humorous narration between numbers. His relaxed interaction with the audience helped create a warm, family-friendly atmosphere throughout the concert. Ben further demonstrated his musical talents with a superb performance of New York State of Mind, accompanying himself on piano, with Suzy Wake joining him on saxophone. This was a particularly enjoyable addition to the programme.

Alongside the solo performances, the concert featured a variety of group numbers and duets, giving every cast member an opportunity to shine. It was evident that great care had been taken to ensure all performers were included and able to contribute to the success of the evening.

Among the musical theatre selections, the fantastic Hamilton arrangement was a particular highlight. Audience participation added an extra layer of fun, with everyone invited to dance along to YMCA and take part in guessing the states during Delaware.

A touching moment came with the tribute to past member Sheila, as the entire company performed Oklahoma. This was a lovely and heartfelt addition to the concert and clearly meant a great deal to those involved.

The evening was filled with beautiful harmonies, strong performances and infectious energy. Congratulations to everyone involved in producing such an enjoyable concert. I look forward to seeing what Vane Tempest Theatre Group has in store as they celebrate their 50th anniversary year.
