Although not one of my favourite musicals, much credit must be given to the production team who, under the direction of Martin Tyrrell, enthused and inspired the players to produce performances that attracted and amused their sizeable audiences. Trish Burgess (as Mrs Overall) was outstanding in her emulation of Julie Walter’s original characterisation. Debs Richards (as Miss Babs) and Daisy Anne Ivatt (as Miss Berta) worked extremely hard in their principal roles. Anita Heaton (as Miss Bonnie) capably demonstrated her strong vocal talent and clear diction. Daran Bland (As Tony) was ideally cast as the insensitive loan shark and his performance was very much in contrast with those of Paul Coleman (as Mr Watkins) and Andrew ‘PJ’ Canham (as Derek) who played ‘an affectionate couple’. The choreography was well executed and the costumes were appropriate. The ‘amateurish happenings’ included in the show produced additional humourous touches. The challenge for the team was to replicate entertainment comparable to that delivered by the original cast and on this score their efforts can be termed successful. Well done!
