I doubt there will be many people who have not seen or heard of “Acorn Antiques” by Victoria Wood. The television show was loosely based on other TV shows such as Crossroads and had the expected wobbly sets; this could not be said of this show which had a perfect and very convincing set.
Anyone who attended this sell out production certainly had a treat, we have all seen the flirty Miss Babs made famous by Celia Imrie in the television production, well I am not sure how many times Jo Smith had seen it but she perfected this character and was able to deliver a first class performance, as was Wendy Prew in the part of Miss Berta. The third of the sisters Miss Bonnie was played by Belinda Lindley who was also able to give a perfect performance.
After the opening number the show goes into the Acorn Antiques’ shop and the first two people in are stereotypical YTS types Hugh and Mimi played convincingly by Harry Jessop and Chantele Smith, they were perfect and never slipped from their characterisations.
Of course the character in this show which everyone knows and loves is Mrs Overall which was created by the incomparable Julie Walters, I say incomparable but in this show Wendy Chable was a very close comparison in fact she was perfect, her delivery of the lines and her mannerisms you could easily have thought you had been watching Julie Walters on stage.
The whole production was brilliant and provided a very enjoyable evening’s entertainment.
Thank you Lamproom.
