It was a pleasure to spend a miserable cold evening being wonderfully entertained by Spen. Acorn Antiques is based on the well loved TV spoof, and revolves around three sisters Miss Babs (Alice Dabrowska), Miss Berta (Angela Buffham-Wheeler), Bonnie (Jaijai Ekins) and of course Mrs Overall (Judith Morris). The story, is more of a play with music, follows the fortunes of a row of shops on the high street in a place called Manchesterford!!! The owner of the shops has sold out to a property developer who in turn changes the more traditional shops into a Tanning Booth, Hong Kong Thong and Panty shop, a Botox Shop and the Antique shop into a coffee bar. This made for a fun filled evening with lots of laughter, the audience loved it. All the characters excelled in their particular roles with Mrs Overall leading the way with her 'Brummie' accent and her rolling gait. None of the music is well known, but the cast put the musical numbers over very well, including a tap number with sparkling costumes and bowler hats. Yes we did enjoy this tale of corporate greed, amnesia and macaroons. Calendar Girls next year? bring it on.
