According to Rumour by Robert Scott is a fast-paced, hilarious farce brought to life by Bawtry Phoenix Theatre, in a way that had the audience laughing from start to finish. This play revolves around a mix-up of misunderstandings, secrets, and ever-escalating chaos, and the Bawtry cast delivered each moment with impeccable timing and charisma.

The Bawtry Phoenix Theatre is the perfect setting for such an intimate comedy, with its cosy, inviting atmosphere drawing the audience right into the action. The friendly front-of-house staff created a welcoming vibe that added to the overall charm of the evening.

The stage was well used with multiple entrances which helped the show to flow nicely. With the show being set in one room it made it easy to stage. The incorporation however of lighting and flow of the show helped move the show through the 24 hour period nicely. The use of props was well thought out and the although minimal really worked to not make the stage look crowded.

The small cast of eight were an excellent team and really helped each other shine for their different merits, while equally coming together as a cohesive unit. Heather Wragg has led the cast as director to pull out small details that makes the show work so well.

Will Wheatley shines in the role of Carter, the central figure around whom the chaos whirls. His energy and commitment to the role brought out the character's desperation and confusion, making him both relatable and hilarious. Ella Mason as Kitty brought a delightful presence, perfectly balancing her character’s quirks with moments of genuine humour. Andy Kemp’s portrayal of Roger added to the initial humour provided by Will Wheately to make a great double act. Charlotte Fricker’s as Emma added layers of comedic tension with her own levels of whisperings and plans. Iris Ragilhole as Ashley was a fantastic addition, her performance lively and engaging, while Jane Wheatley as Harriet delivered each line with a sharp wit that had the audience laughing every time she was on stage. Oakley Knighton, who took on the challenge of playing two different characters, twins Max and Martin had excellent timing and must have been exhausted with the constant hilarious costume changes. With distinct mannerisms and excellent physical comedy, Knighton created two unique, believable characters, adding an extra dose of fun and confusion to the show. Chris Austin’s portrayal of Logan rounded out the cast with a steady performance that added depth to the ensemble.

The direction and pacing were excellent, ensuring that each joke and moment landed as it should. The cast clearly enjoyed themselves, and their enthusiasm was infectious, spreading through the theatre and creating an wonderful evening for the audience. According to Rumour is a complex farce, and Bawtry Phoenix Theatre’s production handled the challenge with professionalism and charm. This performance is a testament to the talent within the Bawtry Phoenix Theatre group, and According to Rumour was a resounding success. For anyone looking for a night filled with laughter and comedy performance in a charming setting, this production is not to be missed.
