One of the advantages of a concert is that it creates an opportunity for many members of the company to show off their talents as soloists and there certainly is a wealth of talent in this young company. Of the 70 cast members more than half were given solo or ensemble numbers and each was as impressive as the next. At times it was easy to forget that these soloists were so young as they gave such mature and assured performances. The programme was very varied and had been compiled by the youngsters themselves giving them ownership. Having suggested all the numbers which came from a cross section of well known and lesser known films and musicals, the production team arranged them into sections which were cleverly interpreted.
The opening "Fairytales" section was enchanting creating a dreamlike atmosphere while the following section "Les Miserables" was stirring and in stark contrast. The vocal arrangements here were excellent and we were treated to some powerful choral singing as well as first class solo and choral work. "Thoughts" section contained some lesser known numbers. I particularly enjoyed "My New Philosphy" and "The Cup Song" which was extremely well done and intriguing to watch. Act 2 opened with a lovely medley all relating to "Colours". Again the numbers were all well sung and backed by expressive dancers who were beautifully costumed. "Blue Moon" sung unaccompanied as a sextet by some of the older lads was very impressive. Sparkly costumes created a "Magic" section and indeed there were some magical moments where the younger and older members of the company certainly did "Sparkle and Shine". The tone of the evening again changed as we were treated to some emotive numbers in "Dreams" particularly "The Prayer" and "Angel" which brought a tear to the eye. The full company showed it's vocal strength in the final section of the evening with "When You Believe","Beautiful Dreamer", which is their own number and is always sung with such conviction and meaning, and "That's What Makes You Beautiful."
With 43 numbers in the show there was a tremendous amount for these youngsters to learn not only vocally but also dance routines which were well choreographed and general movement whch was slick throughout. Yet the whole evening moved along seamlessly with the transition from one setting to another appearing effortless. This was another fabulous evening of entertainment full of atmosphere and it was very evident that the entire cast was having fun. I congratulate every young person on stage and the production team who must have worked so hard to produce a concert of such a high standard.
