If you ever needed anything to put you in the Christmas mood, then ‘A Stourport Christmas’ will provide it! Stourport Choral, together with Stourport-on -Severn Brass Band and 18 eager youngsters from Wilden Primary School provided all the ingredients, plus interval mince pies and a surprise visit from the man in the white beard.

Part 1 opened with a joint rendition of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ followed by four numbers from the choir including some nice harmony during ‘King Jesus Hath a Garden’. The Brass Band then gave us three numbers including an impressive cornet solo from Andrew Lane during ‘Away in a Manger’ followed by a rousing version of ‘Do they know it’s Christmas?’. Wilden School then sang three numbers including ‘Little Drummer Boy’ suitably accompanied by several youngsters and their drums. Everyone was encouraged to join ‘Hark the Herald Angel Sing’ before the closing number in Part 1 with ‘A Christmas Fantasy’.

Part 2 was just as varied including a very amusing version of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’, when audience and choirs, the latter with props or suitably dressed depicting various days, joined together with great fun. This was followed by the choir with an impressive unaccompanied version of ‘Deck the Halls’.

There was no shortage of laughs throughout the evening, with I am pleased to say more of Ollie Wilson’s terrible Christmas jokes during his introductions for each Band number, which he conducted with flourish. Congratulations are due to Stourport-on- Severn Brass Band for their promotion to the Second Section of the West Midlands Area Brass Band Championships earlier in the year.

Everyone joined in again for the final three numbers of the evening including ‘Schneewalzer’ which gave everyone the opportunity to get some exercise, ready to return home for Christmas!

Congratulations and thanks to all involved in another entertaining Christmas Concert.
