For anyone who didn’t attend the latest offering from Thurcroft Musical Theatre Group, A Step In Time last week, you missed an absolute belter of a show. It was everything a concert should be, and more. The show was directed and choreographed to perfection by Tanvia Holden. I was shocked to read that this was Tanvia’s first attempt at directing. She did a fabulous job, and I’m sure some directors with many more years under their belt could learn from Tanvia’s fresh and modern approach. Ray Gallagher, Musical Director, proved once again why he is a much sought after MD in our area. The sound coming from the orchestra and the cast was exceptional. I must mention the superb sound from Neil Myers. The band volume was just right, and we heard every word that was coming from the stage, not an easy task in the Gordon Bennett.
The cast worked extremely hard, with harmonies, dance routines and many costume changes. The concert was put together very well, with selections from modern and classic musicals, and finished with a fabulous festive finale.
Sam Bates showed us yet again what a talented performer he is. Sam can do anything he turns his hand too. From fooling around, to the romantic lead, Sam was captivating and his rendition of Waving Through A Window, from Dear Evan Hansen , was stunning. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m obsessed with Julie Andrews. Faye Wood was brilliant in the Mary Poppins section. She captured every inch of Andrew’s Poppins, while also delivering her own interpration with great facial expressions and a fabulous singing voice. I was sat there thinking, this lady would make a great Maria Von Trapp.
One of the audience's highlights was Six. The energy in the hall was on fire when Katy Jess, Ruth, Tanvia, Hannah and Lauren took to the stage as the 6 Ex wives. I would happily pay to see these six ladies perform the full musical. Daniel Comer also deserves a shout out as he performed the sash hit sea shanty, Wallerman.
However, for me the performance of the evening came from Jude Howard as the Bird woman. Feed the Birds always reduces me to tears and here was no exception. Jude was captivating as the woman selling her wares for tuppence a bag. Jude was well supported by the ensemble in this number, with some stunning harmonies.
TMTG go from strength to strength and I can’t wait to see what you do next. Many thanks to all, especially Jenny, for your hospitality, and the delicious pie and peas.
