This show presents a vibrant 60s mood throughout, with a score of songs that remind you of others from the period, and a raucous plot about teenage boys looking for some fun on a Saturday night alongside the girls who are looking for the perfect partner. With a suitably attired cast and the band on stage, we were transported to the “Club a Go Go” where the owner, Eric Rubber Legs de Vene, has the final word and tries to keep order amongst the mayhem of teenage relationships. As the only official adult of the story, Graham Duncan, as Eric, gave an all-round strong performance, neatly weaving together the pieces of the plot. Amidst the mayhem there is an underlying sweet story of Rick and Sharon, who were played by Craig Wallace and Jamie Donkin. Both sang and acted these roles superbly, and their duets were excellent. The confident Gary, who is envied by the boys and loved by the ladies, was well portrayed by Steven Lauder, and the part of Sue, who is torn by her delight at being Gary’s girlfriend and insecurity because of his infidelity, was well played by Emily Hardy. Her rendition of “Twiggy” was particularly good. As the man with a bet, Gary Hoyle, as Eddie, gave a hilarious character portrayal, and had the audience laughing out loud when his bet finally paid off. His campaign to win over (frigid) Bridget gave many fun moments and Rachel Duncan, as Bridget, was very good in her portrayal of a loyal friend to Sue. Gaynor Lewis, as Penny, gave good support and made her presence felt as a strong ally of the girls, The audience enjoyed the appearance of the hippies “Shirl and Terry”, played by Abigail Foster and Adam Bailey, and their duet was super.
There was good singing, dancing, and support throughout by the ensemble, and the band was excellent. All of the company numbers were well performed, but the highlight for me was “Please Don’t Tell Me”, the vocals were super. The set was simple but worked effectively with good use of lighting, and the sound quality was good. The production had good pace and was thoroughly entertaining. Congratulations to Linda and her team.
