What a wonderful way to celebrate one of the greatest heroes of Musical Theatre. Musical Director Alan Dean put together a cabaret of Sondheim’s wonderful works, which highlighted some of his best and perhaps unknown. What a delight it was to see so many, young and old, celebrating the work of this wonderful man.
Knutsford Musical Theatre Company had a ball performing each number with the required amount of emotion and energy. Every single harmony could be heard bringing together such a wonderful sound especially in the company numbers. Barbara Turner supported a wonderful cast as Producer and brought out the best in each performer. I don’t think we would have missed the choreography if the numbers were static and I feel that eveningwear might have been much better aesthetically, perhaps giving more of a cabaret feel to the evening.
Performances of note came from Lilian Atkinson singing ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses’ from Gypsy. She brought the fun element out in the song and blasted the stage with so much love for performing. Also Joan Dean as Mrs. Lovett from Sweeney with her rendition of ‘By the Sea Mr. T’ again bringing the every bit of humour needed as she captured everyone’s attention for all the right reasons. ‘Anyone Can Whistle’ was sung and acted beautifully by Barbara Fuller. Special mention must go to the children who really stepped up to the mark and performed with so much energy. Sam Reece was excellent singing ‘Not While I’m around’. 'Harm you’ and ‘Giants in the Sky’ sung by Toby Abbott was quite lovely showing off great control with difficult falsetto notes and Rowan Perry is definitely a little star in the making. – congratulations.
Overall, a really great nights entertainment with some lovely touches and a good balance of wonderful music by Sondheim. A true legend. Congratulations to all involved.
