This was only the second amateur presentation of “A Piece of Cake” by Lucy Bennett, and the Marlowe`s gave a good interpretation of a play that sometimes, through no fault of the actors, was rather slow to get going.
The play revolved around the opening of a café whose speciality was mainly cakes, and the trials and tribulations of our heroine, Penelope, played with good poise and confidence by Felicity Freeman. Into the shop to do the refurbishment came Peter, played by Chris Davies, a troubled divorcee who proved to be a positive foil for Felicity. Rick Law was equally as effective as David and lightened the piece with his sardonic humour. But the highlight of the evening was Tamzin Grayson as the waitress Lizzie, dizzy and clumsy, her comic timing was perfect, and for me gave an hilarious show-stealing performance, and she still got her man! Tom Cheshire as the smooth man about town operator Michael Parks, competently completed the line-up.
With members of Team Marlowe smoothly completing the set changes, this production was a worthy tribute to Gil Townes, their late Chairman, and maintained the Players` reputation for quality presentations.
