Although I have seen Phoenix Players several times now a variety evening was a first having usually seen them perform either full length plays or pantomime.
The show billed as ‘an evening of sketches, songs, laughs and an emotional twist’ lived up to the title. The evening provided entertainment to suit all tastes consisting of a variety of sketches and music.
In between sketches were musical numbers consisting of solos, duos and trios as well as company numbers. The balance between the range of musical numbers and sketches was well constructed and enabled some company members to be involved in a number of these. The evening flowed well to enable a swift transition between sketches and music. As many members of the society performed in several different sections it would be difficult to mention any particular people as it was evident everyone had worked hard to achieve the result.
The highlight of the evening was however, ‘Sarah and George’ performed by Lydia Shorey, Graham Robson, Baz Stilinski and Kirsty Wright. Written and directed by Andrea Hardy this was a thought provoking and nicely written piece. I am aware this play was scheduled to be entered a drama festival a few days afterwards. I hope the festival will not be the last time the play is seen as it had some very good elements to it and was played with great sentiment.
The whole evening was compiled and directed by Kirsty Caudell in her directing debut who should be proud of her achievement as devising an evening’s entertainment starting with a blank piece of paper is no mean feat.
It is always a pleasure to be with Phoenix Players and I look forward to seeing ‘Believe’ written by Baz Stillnski during September 2019.
