The members of New Garrett Theatre provided a vast range of numbers, twenty-two in total, from a wide selection of Musicals, with great conviction throughout. The evening was split into three sections of Old/New and Jukebox Musicals, with breaks factored in to make the evening a great social event for guests.
The welcome was warm, myself and my guest instantly felt we were in for a good night. Greeted by the Front of House Team aswell as Yvonne Gerard and Megan (Director) it was great to feel the passion that exuded from all these individuals for the society and its members.
The comperes ‘Jim’ and ‘Theo’ led with humour and they instantly gained the audience’s respect and had them laughing at their approach, ensuring we were all entertained.
The attire was simple but effective, with the cast wearing ‘The New Garrett’ printed T-shirts in various personalised styles, which stood out to reflect the diverse cast, reflecting the values and warmth of the society.
A strong atmosphere was straightaway created by ‘Opening Night’ from “The Producers,” followed by an array of well sung numbers. ‘Somewhere’ from ‘West Side Story’ was on pointe, delivered by Megan and the final song of act one ‘Oklahoma’ is where the chorus came into their own and made the room stand to attention - well done!
This review cannot miss the energetic and engaging Stephanie as the Quiz Master, well deserved credit for bringing the whole room together to have some fun in the interval. Lots of laughter and much enjoyment!
Part 2 opened with a compelling version of ‘Candy Store’ from “Heathers” led by Amy and Megan, followed with what can be described as a hard song to sing ‘Dead Mom’ from ‘BettleJuice’, however this did not stop Emma from belting this out. ‘Wait for it’ from ‘Hamilton’ is challenging and Louis made this song his own with good stage presence – there was some good choreography for this too.
‘Six’ in Act Two from ‘Six the Musical’ was by far one I will remember for a while, this number stood out to me in its slickness and again the choreography was strong.
The evening was rounded off with six excellent final numbers. Cameron gave a chilling and beautiful guitar-led version of ‘Whatsername’ from ‘American Idiot’ which gave us some entertaining variety.
The ‘Abba Medley’ and ‘Greatest Days’ had people dancing and singing with some popular harmonies.
Other people to mention are Jess Singing ‘We Will Rock You’ which screamed power and confidence, as well as Jayne Reed who also showed her beautiful voice in ‘’You will be Found’ from ‘Dear Evan Hansen.’
It was a pleasure to review New Garrett Theatre and discover what variety of music they bring to the stage, supported by an array of backstage, technical, and front of house members. Overall, an enjoyable evening.
