The society’s weekly Summer Special this year was an evening showcasing a wide range of music from swing and rock ‘n’ roll to the Jersey Boys, Miss Saigon, Abba, Queen, Michael Jackson and David Bowie. Also included was a bit of Old Time Music Hall and a selection of New Seekers hits.
Perhaps I would have liked a few more theatre numbers but this was an enjoyable collection although it did not have a real theme and appeared at times to be a bit disjointed. However, this did not distract from the musical performances of an enthusiastic cast who were also required to move the main compilations, everything being superbly accompanied with keyboard and drums.
I thought that the Jersey Boys Collection was very good and we had an excellent performance of Make You Feel My Love. Monty Python’s “Working Class Playwrite” was also extremely well executed.
The costumes were very bright and the use of the screen at the back of the stage, recently incorporated at Spotlight Theatre, was useful in reminding us who presented the original versions of most of the items in the programme.
Afterwards, several members of the audience told me how much they had enjoyed the show and they all felt that it deserved a bigger audience, although the theatre wasn’t empty by any means. I agree!
