Following the success of last year’s Compilation the Company had decided that as this was so popular they would use the same winning formula and present“A Night at The Theatre- Broadway and Beyond”The strong Production Team of Jenny Daniels, Director, Lisa Carolan, Musical Director and Choreographer, with Joanna Hindle, Assistant Choreographer must have put in many hours of rehearsal to produce the high standard of performance from all the talented cast. It is encouraging to see the progression of the students from one year to the next, growing in confidence, as they increase their skills in all aspects of Musical Theatre.
This year we saw, again, a fast-paced show, which moved along without a hitch as the cast introduced us to a wide variety of theatrical items both old and new.The enthusiasm and commitment was clear to see from the opening number in Act One, “The Greatest Show” to the final numbers “Come Alive“ and“We Go Together”.Every performer was given a chance to shine, either in solo items or in the group ensemble numbers.
It is often difficult to sing with backing tracks but on the whole, this worked well tonight. The Musical Numbers were carefully chosen to showcase the individual talents of the cast.
I would like to have seen the name of the shows, in the programme, in addition to the name of the item, as some of the audience may be unfamiliar with the show from which the number came.
The star-cloth with ever changing colours was a very effective backdrop and props were simple but handled efficiently to ensure a seamless transition from one number to the next.Congratulations to the Stage Manager, Richard Edwards and the backstage team, including the chaperones, for all the unseen input necessary for the smooth running of the show. Lighting was used effectively to create the necessary atmosphere for each number and the sound balance was first class.I was very impressed with the Costume Designers for the immaculate outfits, with great attention to detail and also for the appropriate match to each musical selection.
There were many highlights in the Production. Hannah Dixon showed a great maturity and understanding in the poignant “ Burn “ and “The Life I Never Led”.There was an emotional number “God Help the Outcasts” by Hannah and the Company whilst Abbie Gresty and Company performed a beautiful version of “True Colours”. Declan Wilkinson showed his versatility with contrasting numbers, “Ain’t that a Kick in the Head” and “Stars”.
There was an excellent feel good factor to this Production as every cast member delivered their very best performances to the delight of the packed audience. Well done to all involved.
