A Night At The Musicals
5th December 2019

Thornton - Cleveleys Youth Theatre knocked this concert out of the park!

I didn’t realise we had so much young talent in the area and I have to say it seems like they attend TCYT.

Congratulations to Jenny Daniels (Director) and her team Lisa Carolan (Musical Director & Stage Manager), Charlotte Greaves (Assistant Musical Director), Joanna Hindle (Choreographer) and Jack Price (Assistant Choreographer) on a truly professional, well thought out and slick show.  There was a real mix of songs and performances in this concert ranging from 50’s hits from Wizard of Oz right the way up to todays big hits from Evan Hansen and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.  The cast was large with 50 members and the stage at Thornton Little Theatre, as I’m sure most of you will know, is not so large!  The team did a great job of fitting that cast on that stage.  Choreography was strong and well suited to the casts abilities and the transitions from number to number, well rehearsed and slick.  There were 46 numbers in this concert which, when I sat down, thought was way too many, but to be fair, I was shocked at how quickly TCYT rattled through hit after hit.

Its difficult to single out performers from a concert, however, there were a few stand out performances that seemed to get the whole audience going.  “Seasons of Love” from Rent, a favourite of mine, was outstanding.  This was followed up with “You Will Be Found” from Dear Evan Hansen which was top class.  The dancers did a great job of “Sing Sing Sing” from Dancin’.  In the 2nd act the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang section had some great vocals and lovely physical theatre followed by a very confident performance of “When Will My Life Begin” from Tangled by Annie - Good Job!

The production team had worked very hard to produce fantastic harmonies in the vocals and slick choreography and an overall professional standard performance.  It was lovely to hear the Billy Elliott section which was very popular with the audience and I particularly enjoyed the Newsies number “Seize The Day”.

The performance was part costumed very well, with suggestions to characters or colourings that make you think of the original show - cleverly done.  Jenny did a good job working with the cast to develop the performers characterisations, the casting was looked after really well with the performers of each solo fitting their character really well.  I enjoyed Jenny’s vision for her scenes which help the whole performance together.

I can say that this was certainly one of the most enjoyable performance that I have seen this year, amateur or professional.  Well done everyone!
