Two things were obvious from the first note of this concert. One was how pleased the members were to be back performing. The second was how pleased the audience were to see them back. It is almost two years since theatre groups have been able to get back to enjoying their hobby.
It obviously didn’t take long to shake off the cobwebs as this was a showcase of the depth and range of talent that exists in the Society. The selection of music for the programme was excellent as it covered old favourites together with songs from more recent films. There were new and original versions of several numbers which breathed new life into them. If I tried to mention every number and soloist I would be here for a very long time and I wouldn’t want to miss any single person out. Every solo, duet, trio and ensemble were quality in terms of the singing, presentation and sympathy for the genre. It was obvious from the audience reaction what they thought of them and, after all, that’s one of the reasons for doing it. The closing numbers of each half gave ample opportunity for the audience sing and clap along to the music. They certainly did that and the response must have been very pleasing to all involved and made everything worthwhile.
Steph Coleman’s direction ensured that the presentation was slick throughout and Ian Room’s musical direction produced an evening of high-quality singing.
A very pleasing aspect was the large number of young people who were prepared to show off their considerable talents. Another plus was that most of the ‘youngsters’ set the tone for engagement with what was happening in front of them. It was almost as though they were hearing numbers for the first time so well done for that.
Congratulations to everyone for getting the ball rolling again and long may it continue to roll. Thank you for entertaining again!
