One of the many things I like about my visits to Thurcroft Musical Theatre Group is the warm welcome we receive as we enter the Gordon Bennett Memorial Hall. Jenny and all the front of house team at Thurcroft should be applauded, as they welcome every audience member with smiles.
Tanvia Holden returns to Thurcroft, as the director, and I must say what a great job she did. With a review show, it’s very easy to recycle the old show tunes of yesteryear, but this selection was fresh, modern and utterly delightful. I particularly enjoyed the swimming section, which raised many a laugh from the audience. Emma Cahill, choreographer, created original routines which were able to be performed by all cast members, regardless of ability. This year, Thurcroft welcomed a new Musical Director, Eloise Canzini. Eloise is new to the area, and I can only imagine that after this production she will be in high demand throughout the region. The harmonies were a delight, and the 5 piece band, under Eloise’s control was joyful.
Now to the cast. What was so nice to see this year is that the group has had an influx of younger members, and their energy throughout the show was wonderful to see. Sam Bates, proved yet again what a powerhouse he is, with his rendition of Soul of a Man from Kinky Boots. A difficult song, due to the range required, but Sam pulled this off with ease. A personal highlight was hearing the fine duet, Tell Him, by Tanvia and Sue. The ensemble worked hard in this show, as they were barely off the stage, but I really enjoyed the selection from Fisherman’s Friend. What stuck with me through this production, however, was the versatility of Karen. In the first act, Karen had me crying with laughter, and crying through heartbreak during the second act. A great performance.
A few sound issues on the night that I attended, but this did not distract from the joy and enthusiasm that coming from the stage. This show warmed my heart on a cold October evening. Many congratulations to you all.
