This was my first visit to Broughty's spring production, deputising for my Reg 2 colleague. With a programme of over fifty numbers, a cast of over forty and a house-full audience, A Musical Extravaganza was an evening of delightful music and dance. From the colourful opening of Another Opening, Another Show right through to the exceptional Les Miserable finale there was a depth of talent which many societies would die for! The mixture of all-time favourites and lesser-known works by Jerry Herman and a selection of war-time memories provided something for everyone and the show contained so many highlights that it would be unfair of me to mention any performers individually. Numbers which impressed me - and the audience - were Play a Simple Melody, I Won't send Roses, Bosom Buddies, I Am What I Am, Tap Your Troubles Away, Hello Dolly, a Beatles Medley, a range of wartime melodies, Bui Doi and two musical interludes at the piano. Top chorus numbers were Hooray for Hollywood, an Irving Berlin Medley, Phantom of the Opera and two numbers from The Lion King, but the cream on the cake was the outstanding finale of songs from Les Miserables in which chorus and every soloist and duettist excelled bringing a superb evening of music to a resounding climax. Thank you Broughty, I hope to visit you again.
