This theatrical adaptation of Agatha Christie's classic whodunit, *A Murder is Announced*, by Monifieth Amateur Dramatics at Monifieth Theatre is a captivating and intricately plotted production that kept the audience on the edge of their seats from start to finish. The show is a masterclass in suspense and character-driven storytelling, delivered with a touch of quintessential British charm.

The play opens with a tantalising premise: an advertisement in the local paper announces a murder will occur at Miss Blacklock’s residence, Little Paddocks, at 6:30pm. The bewildered residents gather, and the tension builds as the clock ticks towards the appointed hour. When the lights go out and a gunshot rings, the stage is set for a classic Christie mystery, complete with red herrings, complex motives, and unexpected twists.

The cast delivered strong performances across the board. Shelagh Phillips-Roberson, as the unflappable Miss Marple, brings a delightful mix of shrewdness and warmth to the role, effortlessly unravelling the tangled web of secrets and lies. Cath Eddie portrays Miss Blacklock with an intriguing blend of vulnerability and steely resolve, delivered with refreshing natural characterisation, made her a compelling focal point of the drama. Rhoda Burke was adept as the sharp-tongued and slightly eccentric Bunny, while Wilma Low brought a comedic and lively energy to the role of their maid Mitzi.

Ivy Sutherland's portrayal of Patrick Simmons is both mysterious and engaging, keeping the audience guessing about his true intentions. Kiarra Fenemore, as Julia, offers a nuanced performance that added depth to the complex family dynamics of the play. Ean Smith, as Inspector Craddock, and Steven Armstrong, as Sergeant Mellors, make a formidable detective duo, grounding the play with their authoritative and measured performances.

Jo Fergie as Phillipa, Isaac Devereux as Edmund Swettenham, and Angela Taylor as Mrs. Swettenham each bring their own unique touch to their characters, enriching the narrative with their distinct and memorable characterizations. Alexander Stewart's portrayal of Rudi, although brief, added intrigue and unpredictability to the story.

Director Rhoda Burke, also playing Bunny at the last minute, has done an excellent job in maintaining the play’s brisk pace, identifying the variety of character traits, and ensuring that the tension never wanes. The staging was both elegant and functional, with the set design capturing the cozy yet slightly ominous atmosphere of a small English village. The use of lighting and sound is particularly effective during the murder scene, heightening the sense of fear and confusion.

One of the production's standout features is its ability to balance the darker elements of the plot with moments of humour and levity. The witty dialogue and the interplay between characters add a layer of enjoyment, preventing the story from becoming too heavy or morose.

*A Murder is Announced* is a thoroughly entertaining and expertly crafted play that will delight fans of Agatha Christie and newcomers alike. With its compelling narrative, it’s a must-see for anyone who appreciates a good mystery an

A thoroughly enjoyable evening once again at Monifieth Theatre. Many thanks for the invitation.
