This was my 3rd visit to the lovely Attfield Theatre – not only an easy place to park (which is a huge thing these days!), but all the staff are great, with no bad seat in the house. This theatre is a reminder that Shakespeare doesn’t need a grand setting to put on an entertaining play.
Over the years I have seen many interpretations of Mr Shakespeare’s tale, from very traditional to downright bizarre – this production was a good balance between traditional and alternative, with Director Debbie Jones following a traditional interpretation with hints of modernism which shows the intelligence and understanding of the actors to the complexity of the language. In the program, Debbie notes productions support from Rosie Druce, Jennie Gregory, Glynn Swift, Kath Evans, Liz Franks, Julie Clark and Malcolm Lord. Despite some projection teething problems on the night this didn’t detract from the production, with lighting and sound otherwise faultlessly provided by Rosie Druce and Ffin Dillon
The Athenian Nobility showed great pomp and character and were played by Nathan Doggett, Lucia Spreafico, Hobie Bell-Tomkinson (also playing Flute), Ged Mills, Jake Dillon, Megan Lawson, Jenna Bell-Tomkinson and Evie Meade. All handled their roles excellently, with a special mention for Jenna Bell-Tomkinson who brought sincerity and believability to her performance.
The Fairies, led by Alfie Guntrip as a suitably devious Oberon were great. Oberon is desperate for Titania (played regally by Millie Forsyth), to fall in love with him. Poppie Chapman, playing Puck was an excellent mischievous imp, supported by Alyssa Meade, Evie Meade and Lilly Owen.
Now, The Mechanicals – who doesn’t love a comedy Shakespeare character! The Beastly Headed fool “Bottom”, played by Jasper Aldridge was played with expertise beyond his years – Jasper carried this role better than I’ve seen many adults. Morgan Richards, Alyssa Meade, Caitlin Brookes and Paige Camps all provided super stagecraft, comedy and diction in their roles.
Overall a really enjoyable evening at The Attfield Theatre, thank you for your welcome.
