This Scottish Premiere was an inspired choice for this junior group and the audience were treated to a performance well in advance of the age group of the company. The show tells the story of the trials and tribulations of Sara Crewe, separated from her father when he goes off on a mission to Timbuktu and she is sent from her beloved Africa to boarding school in England. The opening was very cleverly staged with a split stage depicting London and Africa and got us off to a rousing and colourful start which was delivered with gusto by the company. Logan Stewart as Captain Crewe portrayed the military character with aplomb and was well matched with Julia Murrie as his daughter. Her delivery of “Live out Loud” was particularly well sung. She was well supported by Becky the maid (Rose Stephens) and the schoolgirl chorus led by Isla Nelson, Zoey Morgan, Issy Ramsay, Catie Mathieson, Lena Curson and Anna Scarlett. The bullying headmistress (Miss Minchin) played to perfection by Rebekah Mitchell was a perfect foil for the caring Miss Amelia (Stefi Curson). The double role of Aljana (Sara’s African Nanny) and Queen Victoria was portrayed beautifully by Penny Stephens. Fergus Durston as Pasko (the African guide) and Catrina Fraser (Widow Zuma) also deserve special mention. Music was provided by backing tracks and ably conducted by Greig Baxter. The choreography and direction by Fiona Retalic assisted by Rachel Stephens was imaginative, lively and well rehearsed. With some of the main characters being double cast by all accounts the youngsters on the alternate performances did equally well. Congratulations to this group of young stars.
