Once again SONG have entertained us with a production presented and performed by some very talented young people in the form of a Revue called “A Handful of Song” which was staged in three very different parts. In the first part they gave us something a little different with a piece of drama called “Tales of Arabia” written and directed by Paul Wilkinson. The play is set in 12th century England and tells the story of a group of travelling actors who are given a scroll of scripts by a stranger which they perform and are based on the story of Scheherazade and the Arabian nights. However they are in danger as the scroll has been stolen from the Lord and his men are searching for the culprit. Here the young cast showed off their acting and comedy talent with abundance .Comic timing, diction, clarity of words and characterizations were spot-on and the story and the action could be followed easily, it was a very enjoyable piece of theatre.
The second part of the evening’s entertainment was called “A Handful of Songs” in this section we were treated to a number of solos and duets mostly from musical theatre. All the contributors sung exceeding well with some beautiful voices on show for us to listen to, all were accompanied by Paul Williams on the keyboard excellently. I was particularly impressed at the way each of the soloist acted their number with maturity and insight as well as singing it, which kept the audience interested all the way through this part of the entertainment.
The third and last part of the evening was a presentation of “Matilda the Musical in 20 Minutes” this was a 20 minute condensed version of “Matilda” the hit West End and Broadway musical where the cast showed off their musical theatre talents with great aplomb, they all worked with the energy and enthusiasm needed for this production and the singing, narration and dancing was excellent. Choreography by Jenny Birch was vibrant executed well by the cast and just right for this production.
The set and staging was mostly accomplished by the use of various props which worked well and sound and lighting were excellent.
I haven't mentioned any names in this review as the list would be quite long and each participant gave of their all and showed off their talent with great ability. This was an outstanding production which gave me great hope for the future of the musical and theatre as a whole.
Congratulations to Chairman Karen Edge and all the committee of SONG and to all involved in this production for putting together an extraordinary evening’s entertainment and thank you for inviting us we had a super evening. I look forward to seeing you for your next production.
