A Flock of Tigers is a one act play that was part of a double header by HD&OS. Both plays in their Double Act II evening have never been performed by an amateur society.
The opening was well choreographed to the music, to set the scene of being on a train. It shows that a complicated set is not always necessary to set a scene and can be just as interesting.
The set was simply the train seats. All the other parts of the train, such as the train doors were mimed by the actors with very well-timed sound effects. Graham Lay and Clive Bell did a great job in creating the seats and making them look like train seats. It was also a great idea to have the actors from the second play and the director to create the ambience of being on a train.
Steve Deaville played Edmund and Julie Markey played Dolorosa. I felt the way that both Julie and Steve played their respective characters gave a real sense of the period the play was set in, which was 1934.
Steve was a very typical English gentleman, and his clipped very traditional accent was excellent. Julie kept the American accent going throughout the play. Julie was very subtly trying to mirror the way Steve was sitting, again in keeping with a lady of this period. There was a lot of dialogue, and both built the connection between the two characters well throughout the play.
The costumes were super, completely in keeping with period and the characters’ personalities.
This was a wonderful one act play, that contributed to a lovely evening. Thank you to HD&OS
