Hello Wombwell, this is your district rep calling.
What a great evening of entertainment at The Operatic Centre as Wombwell Operatic Society staged A Euro Celebration. The show had a brilliant concept and was executed really well, as we celebrated everything we love about Eurovision. Director and Choreographer, Colleen Owen, assisted by Les Smith, along Musical Directors Jo Owen and Mick Norton, created a fun filled evening revisiting some of our favourite Eurovision moments from Flying the Flag to last years runner up, Spaceman.
The lighting for this production was wonderful and complemented the action on stage. I particularly like the use of haze in the Spaceman number, which created the desired space feel. The costumes used were also a delight for the eyes and the red, white and blue for the UK winners section worked well.
We were taken on our Eurovision journey by our host for the evening, Becca Booth. Becca managed to capture the fun of Eurovision and had some of the iconic one liners such as Hello Wombwell and of course, nil points. The children of the society performed really well and gave us a lovely rendition of All Kinds of Everything by Dana, which won the contest for Ireland in 1970. My favourite number was Euphoria, performed by Adele Murray and backed by the female ensemble. This was a great number and got the audience in the party mood. What made this concert special however, was the fact that we could decide the finale. In true Eurovision style, the audience was able to vote for the song that they wanted to hear again and be crowned champion. On the night I attended, the winner was Making Your Mind Up by Bucks Fizz.
Many thanks to all involved in this great show. My friend Dan and I are huge Eurovision fans, and this was just the tonic to end the week.
