What a wonderful celebration in which some 68 numbers of shows past, and a few for the future, were performed non-stop. The Company used all its resources in soloists, many for the first time, and everyone performed very well. We had children’s numbers, (they also were part of the chorus numbers), and how well they performed. In particular, they sang the So Long, Goodbye number from The Sound of Music, amongst them being the smallest person on the stage, namely Zack Haynes. He is only 10 years old , but what a lovely singing voice and excellent stage presence he has. He will be a star of the future.
Emma Greenhalgh was the Director and Choreographer, and a great job she did. We had a new face directing the small orchestra in the person of Trevor Wilson, whose small ensemble was just right for the show. I noticed the pianist mopping his brow before the start of the next piece, they really did work very hard all night. The same could be said for the performers who hardly had time to change between numbers. There was a screen on the side of the stage showing photographs of all the shows beginning with TG Wilson, who formed the Operatic Society, right through to the present day. The main soloists were David and Janet Miles, David Ferry, James Cornick, Martin Holdsworth, Andrea Rhodes, and they were well supported by Lucille Taylor, Maria Richardson, Hannah Miles, Rhian Sleight, Karen Brechon, Carole Armbrister. Tracie Birdsall, Barbara Funnel and Christopher Donnelly. There was a strong male chorus who excelled in the Entrance of the Peers. With colourful costumes and a strong chorus it was an excellent evening’s entertainment, bringing back lots of happy memories. Very well done Northallerton here’s to the next 40 years and your centenary.
