Poulton Drama have again chosen a challenging play. It is only the second time it has been performed. Jim Cartwright has written a beautiful script and the actors have done him great credit. Opening on an empty playing area, the first character Roger Lloyd Jones as The Caretaker, set the scene, for the construction of a Christmas Fair, in a village hall, not an easy task for the cast as they introduced themselves to the audience. The first act was a gentle comedy and the characters were well drawn and we became completely focussed on the forthcoming “event”. At the interval the audience were able to purchase items on sale at the stalls or have their photographs taken with Father Christmas. A nice touch. I am not sure if this was part of the play or was introduced by Poulton Drama but in any event it was very effective. In the ensuing act we were surprised by each character taking us back to Christmas Past showing important, significant moments in their lives. Their stories were very poignant, as each actor revealed their innermost secrets. None of the characters were judgemental and they were so convincing, at times, bringing a tear to the eye. I  noticed particularly that the audience were completely engrossed with the various stories. I would be remiss if I were to single out any of the players as they all excelled which again goes to prove what a wealth of talent is available to this fine company. Props, lighting and sound, very important to this piece, were entirely appropriate. Direction by Colin Johnston was excellent the pace never faltering and Jim Cartwright must have been pleased he gave Poulton Drama the opportunity to perform this excellent piece. Thank you for your very kind welcome to my wife and myself.
