It was a pleasure, once again, to visit Beaconsfield Operatic Society on the occasion of their Annual Christmas Concert in St Cuthberts Church in Blyth; not only at the end of its Christmas Tree Festival, but also the final event in BOS’s Centenary Year celebrations.

The Festival is a colourful celebration of the Christmas Season, where local businesses and organisations donate a dressed Christmas tree which is displayed in the Church. It lasts a week, and every evening in order to raise funds for the hosts and local charities, they have concerts - the last of which was performed by BOS in these lovely, festive surroundings.

The two-hour Concert, nicely conceived and conducted by Musical Director Susan (Santa) Sabourn, and dextrously (although a little quietly, in my opinion) accompanied by Peter (Santa’s little helper) Robertson, contained a good cross-section of seasonal favourites. I really enjoyed ‘Bethlehem’ from the musical Martin Guerre. It was beautifully performed and really ‘hit the spot’. I also have to mention Kathryn Sabourn who performed ‘The Twelve Days After Christmas’ humorously and with great aplomb. Michael Douglas was our M.C. Once again. He always seems totally at home in this role; his excellent and funny one-liners in abundance.

The familiar ensemble of just short of 30 were excellently drilled by Susan. There were some good solos and their balance and harmonies were lovely. They were dressed in their festive pullovers and little hats… very well done to all. It was nice to hear the young members given some good solo lines too, which they took full advantage of. Many congratulations!. We were treated to many favourites – one of the highlights of which was ‘O Holy Night’ - and also some which were new to me and my companion Pauleen. A splendid programme.

The almost full Church audience really enjoyed the content and showed their appreciation at every opportunity. In his closing comments, it was nice of Michael to mention NODA’s support for the Society over the last twelve months and also their concerns for Regional Councillor Peter. We all wish him well.

Congratulations to everyone involved. Thanks to Chairman Kathleen for the invitation and hospitality. A great night’s entertainment.
