A Christmas Concert

It was lovely to visit Beaconsfield Operatic Society on the occasion of their Annual Christmas Concert in St Cuthberts Church in Blyth during its Christmas Tree Festival; a colourful celebration of the Festive Season, where local businesses and organisations are encouraged and invited to donate a dressed Christmas tree which is displayed in the Church. The Festival lasts a week, and every evening in order to raise funds for the hosts and local charities, they have concerts; one of which was performed by Beaconsfield OS in these lovely, colourful surroundings.

The Concert, very ably put together and conducted by Musical Director Susan Sabourn, and sympathetically accompanied by Peter Robertson, contained almost entirely choral pieces. The exceptions were ‘Merry Christmas To You’ sung nicely by Michael Douglas, and ‘Mary’s Boy Child’ sung by the multi-talented Susan Sabourn. How nice to hear her singing again.

The ensemble were excellent in their vocal versatility and were nicely turned out in their Christmas jumpers and festive fascinators – and that was just the men!. Haha…

We were treated to many favourites and also some which were new to me and my companion Pauleen. A splendid programme.

Our Master of Ceremonies Michael Douglas must have saved up all of his cracker jokes since last year and kept us all highly amused. Well done Mike!.

All in all, the audience enjoyed the programme, showed by their hearty applause. It was lovely to see old friends both in the audience and on stage and to present Sheena, Susan and Jacqui with 35, 45 and 55 years long service awards respectively. Congratulations to them and to everyone involved. A good night’s entertainment.
