The bicentenary year of Charles Dickens was a good time to present A Christmas Carol dealing with Scrooge the penny pinching miser and the awakening of his long forgotton festive spirit. Polly Kings direction of A Christmas Carol was pure live theatre at its best. David Dray ( Scrooge) expertly portrayed the role of the penny-pinching miser whose forgotten festive spirit was re-awakened. The Director’s notes commented that “It’s never too late to change”. Darren Coppe as Scrooge’s clerk (Bob Cratchit) and his family including Tiny Tim played their parts well. Jennifer Baxter (Ghost of Christmas Past) was resplendant in her sparkly dress and Akhil Gowinrath (Ghost of the Christmas Present) was magnificent, his singing and acting were superb. Hilary Harwood (Ghost of the Chrisstmas Future/Blind old hag) played the duel role and brought out her many talents. Excellent support from the rest of the principals. The entire ensemble delighted a very packed audience, enhanced by the wonderful snow scene that capped the happy ending. Steven Bean Musical Director gave good support to the cast conducting the orchestra from behind the scenes. Polly King's expert drilling of the dancers Marley Ghosts, Fezziwig Maids, Abundance Pantomime Girls and Grave Diggers were a delight. Chris Morley and his stage crew and the Set Design team gave us an excellent set. Eddie King Lighting Design and Mike Wheeler Sound complimented the production
