I approached my visit to this Pantomime with mixed feelings. Having been a good friend of John Sangster who was originally cast in the lead role but who sadly passed away recently, I knew that this was going to a very emotional evening.
As the show was directed by Steven Barnes and produced by Beverley Yates, I expected something a little different. I was not disappointed and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. The Period costumes were excellent, so important in Pantomime. Everyone looked as if they were enjoying wearing them and coupled with some very good lighting and effects the show was a pleasure to watch.
The Orchestra under the baton of accomplished Musical Director, Judith Oakes ensured that the production moved at just the correct pace and as a result each scene moved seamlessly from one to the next. Judith had obviously worked hard on the choral aspect of some of the numbers which resulted in very good harmonies. The overall performances by the cast were very good including the well drilled ensemble. I must congratulate Mark Kendall as Scrooge. His was a very good, characterisation bringing out all the nuances in this complex role. His rendition of “This is the Moment” was outstanding. Sarah White as Charlie was delightful in this very funny role. Comedy is obviously another facet of this very talented lady. Paul James made the audience laugh, at every entrance, with his lovely interpretation of the Ghost of Christmas Past. All the children in the audience squealed with delight at the sight of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer played by Debbie Sheehan & Katie Creer.
Innovative Choreography by Jennie Barnes was just what was required for this production and all on stage appeared to be enjoying their participation. Younger members were excited but always disciplined in their routines. Once again, set designers and constructors have excelled.
David White has written a very enjoyable script and he continues to surprise the audience with his witty dialogue. I am certain that dear John Sangster would have been delighted with this latest offering by this very talented company.
All involved are to be congratulated on this production.
Well done to all and thank you for a very enjoyable evening.
