Christmas had come slightly early this year with the Lanarkshire premier of ‘A Christmas Carol’. On stage constantly, John McKenzie brilliantly dramatised the iconic and demanding role of the miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge so well that at times it was easy to forget that 'A Christmas Carol' was about his conversion to goodness. Laurie Thomson made an excellent ghost of Jacob Marley, and Julie Thomson, Richard Hughes and Lori McElroy were well cast in playing the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future respectively. Robert Kirkham provided a fine performance as Bob Cratchit with Adam Stewart (younger) as Tiny Tim. It was also wonderful to see so many young people in the cast with so many great opportunities for minor principals and it is impossible to name everyone who contributed to the recreation of Dickensian London set in Christmas Eve in 1843. The stunning period costumes and set created scenes from a classic Christmas card, and I must congratulate the cast together with the production team for reacquainting us with this classic story. This production brought a fitting end to their golden jubilee year.
