I would imagine that members of Langtoft Junior Players who had been selected to appear in this production of “A Christmas Carol” must have found it necessary to restrict the time spent on their computers, mobile phones and similar electronic devices in order to learn their lines so thoroughly! Members of the cast delivered their words confidently and with much feeling; I thought this particularly impressive since the subjects being commented upon were often debt, deprivation, poverty and death. Whilst commercialism tends to dominate today’s celebration of the Christmas festival and people are encouraged to spend, spend, spend, it was heartening to find young people focussing on the disadvantaged who do not have the means or the opportunities to pursue this trend. The community in Langtoft can be proud of these young people for reminding them of another perspective – that expensive presents are no substitute for human love and kindness. Sensitively directed with the young players responding accordingly, this interpretation resulted in the clear delivery of the important moral messages that the author, Charles Dickens, was endeavouring to promote. There was clever characterisation, especially from Eddie Fisher (as Scrooge) and the blending of modern and period costumes was used effectively to punctuate the story line. The stage crew were kept very busy with the frequent set changes that helped move the storyline on. The lighting and sound effects were expertly delivered and significantly contributed to supporting the action on stage. This was a very ambitious undertaking but with enthusiastic application by every member of the cast it was most successfully completed. Congratulations on this great team effort!
