Well, this was a real surprise for me as I was expecting to see a traditional version of this play! What I saw was a wonderful adaption of Charles Dickens’ much loved ‘A Christmas Carol’ by actor/comedian, Patrick Barlow. This adaption features five actors and two puppeteers and is one of the funniest plays I have seen …
The director, Hannah Johnson, had what must have been a very difficult task in staging this production, but she has done a wonderful job. The casting was perfect, the play had a great pace and the scenes flowed with ease throughout the evening, well done Hannah!
The role of ‘Scrooge’ was expertly played by David Mander, his comic timing was perfect and I loved his facial expressions. Emma Legg as ‘Actor 2’, Richard Llewellyn as ‘Actor 3’, Michaela Clement-Hayes as ‘Actor 4’ and Alan Galway as ‘Actor 5’ all did remarkably well, they each had multiple roles and they all managed to clearly define them, they all showed great timing, all giving some very funny performances. Two more excellent performances were from Alison Thomas as ‘Puppeteer1’ and Marila Dmytrova as ‘Puppeteer 2’ (who also played a violin beautifully). I must not forget the very sweet little puppet of ‘Tiny Tim’. Well done to all the cast of actors, you all gave some excellent and memorable performances.
‘The Studio’ was a perfect venue for this play. The sets were very good and the scene changes were all very slick. The props were excellent and utilised well. The costumes were all very good and in keeping with the period. The lighting and sound quality was excellent throughout the evening.
Thank you to all at Wellingborough Technical Players, both on and off the stage, for what was a faultless, very funny and highly entertaining evening.
